Best Surf Breaks in CdM

Newport Beach is known around the world as one of the best surf spots for both beginners and pros.

Because of the attention that Newport receives, people tend to overlook the many surf spots that Corona del Mar has to offer. One of the best is The Point at El Morro. When a combination swell hits CdM, the waves slightly refract off of the cliff face and create a perfect, barreling left. El Morro also offers a couple other peaky breaks along the beach that are great for bodysurfing, body boarding, and surfing. Another epic but dangerous break in CdM is Reef Point. This break is also in Crystal Cove and is a sketchy reef break. When a South swell and North swell combine, this spot offers a long, steep left. The only problem is that under the water is a rocky, jagged reef. Make one mistake and you and your board could be broken!

Swells

A really nice sized, long period SSW swell and a small NW wind swell hit Corona del Mar on Wednesday. The swell topped out over the weekend and the waves were about 4-6ft.

Water Temperature and Weather

The water this week has been a warm 68 degrees. On Friday and Saturday, the Santa Ana winds hit all of Newport. The Santa Ana winds blow off-shore, and off-shore winds make the waves very hollow and clean. Saturday morning was insanely windy, but the waves were amazing.

Stand Out Breaks for this Week

El Morro: The large SSW swell combined with the insane off shore winds made for an epic couple of days at El Morro. There were perfect, hollow lefts coming off of the rocks and the wave shape was nice all the way down the beach.

Forecast

In the beginning of next week, the waves are going to be pretty small because the SSW swell is fading. On Friday, a new, long period SSW swell will move in and produce good-sized waves over the weekend.

Swells

The waves this week FINALLY picked up. A nice sized SW swell moved in on Thursday and produced 3-5ft waves on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the waves were1-3ft as the SW swell began to die down.

Water Temperature and Weather

This week has been a strange week for weather. On most days, there was thick fog over the ocean in the morning that made for cold and sketchy conditions. The water temperature was about 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

Stand Out Breaks for this Week

El Morro: On Friday and Saturday the waves at El Morro were hollow and clean but a bit walled. They were perfect for getting little barrels and on Friday, the waves were breaking off of the rocks.

Forecast

As the SW swell fades into this coming week, a new NW wind swell will hit early on Monday. On Tuesday, a nice sized S-SSE swell will hit and will carry on through Saturday.

Swells

For the third consecutive week, there haven’t been much of any waves in CdM. Late this week, a small SSW swell came in producing 1-3ft waves on Saturday and Sunday but other than that… nothing.

Water Temperature and Weather

It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter… The water has cooled down to a chilly 65 degrees. There was a pretty thick marine layer for most of the week. The sun poked out in the afternoon a couple of days. The temperature stayed around 71 degrees.

Forecast

Again, the waves look they aren’t going to be too strong next week. A small, faint SSW swell will carry on throughout the week and will mix with a weak NW swell.

Swells

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a swell this week. There was a slight SW swell in the beginning of the week that produced 1-2ft waves but other than that, it has been basically flat.

Water Temperature and Weather

This week, the water temperature warmed up to 67 degrees, which is pretty warm compared to the past couple of weeks. The wind this week has been pretty calm and the sun has poked through the marine layer mostly in the afternoon.

Forecast

The waves this coming week don’t look too promising. NW wind swell energy will mix with very faint south swells producing 1-2ft waves.

What to Do When There Aren’t Any Waves: Week #6

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is an exhilarating, fairly easy way to have tons of fun when there aren’t any waves. If you have never wakeboarded before and already know how to surf, learning how should be quick and seemingly effortless. Wakeboarding is a sport that is a lot like waterskiing. The only difference is that you are on a board instead of skis. CdM’s coastline is perfect for wakeboarding. The ideal conditions for wakeboarding are a windless day with very calm seas. Swells

On Tuesday, a decently sized SSW hit CdM and peaked on Wednesday producing 3-4ft+. This SSW continued through Friday producing 2-3ft waves. On Saturday, the SSW swell continued and the waves were 1-2ft.

Standout Breaks for this Week

El Morro: On Wednesday and Thursday, El Morro was not only pretty big, but the conditions were great. The waves averaged about 4 feet and were pretty hollow. The SSW made for fairly peaky conditions at certain spots.

Water Temperature and Weather

The water this week has hovered around 64°F which is pretty cold for the summer time. This cold water temperature combined with the early morning overcast conditions CdM saw this week can make for a pretty chilly surf session so make sure to bring a wetsuit.

Forecast

On Monday and Tuesday of this coming week, there will be a small SW swell that will produce 1-3ft waves. On Thursday, a new, fairly large SW swell will come in late potentially making for some fun waves over the weekend.

Swells

In the beginning of the week, the large SSE swell from the previous week produced 1-3ft waves on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, a new, long period SW swell came in and peaked on Saturday, producing 4-5ft waves at standout breaks. On Sunday, the SW swell began to die down producing 3-4ft waves.

Standout Breaks for this Week

El Morro: On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, El Morro saw some nice size and shape. Although the conditions were blown out in the afternoon, it was fairly clean early and there were a lot of nicely shaped peaks. In addition to the great waves, the water was also insanely clear making for beautiful, picturesque waves.

Water Temperature and Weather

Unfortunately, the weather throughout most of the week was windy and cold. The water this week cooled down significantly to about 66 degrees. The cold water combined with the overcast, windy conditions can make for a chilly surf session. The best wetsuit for these conditions is a 3.2 full suit.

Forecast

The SW swell will continue to fade until Thursday producing 1-3ft waves. On Thursday, a new, large SW swell will move in that will produce great waves over the weekend.

Swells

This week there was a great SSE swell that hit CdM that produced some nice sized waves. The SSE swell came in on Monday and peaked on Wednesday producing 3-4ft+ waves. As this SSE swell began to fade, a new SSE swell hit and peaked on Friday producing 4-6ft waves at standout breaks. On Saturday, the SSE swell began to wind down and the waves were 3-4ft.

Standout Breaks for this Week

El Morro: On Friday, the waves at El Morro were amazing. The SSE swell combined with the incredibly clean conditions made for all around epic conditions. In addition to nice shape, the waves were also very hollow. The waves were about 4-6ft.

Water Temperature and Weather

Fortunately, the water has stayed fairly warm at about 69 degrees. The weather this week hovered around 70 degrees and was mostly sunny and clear.

Forecast

As the SSE swell slowly fades, the waves will be about 2-3ft from Monday to Wednesday. On Thursday, a new SW swell will hit Corona del Mar producing 2-4ft waves.

Handplaning

Handplaning is an increasingly popular way of riding waves that is a lot like bodysurfing. A handplane is a small surfboard like board that has a strap to fit your hand. The point of the handplane is to give you more speed and greater menuverability when you are riding waves. When bodysurfing, most of your body is in the water therefore limiting your speed. When handplaning, as much as 50 percent of your body is out of the water maximizing your speed and control. To handplane, all you need is a pair of fins and a handplane. Handplanes are made from a variety of materials ranging anywhere from plain old pine wood to recycled surfboards. I personally have a handplane made by the company Enjoy Handplanes. They make old, broken surfboards into beautiful handplanes. Check out their website to see some of their innovative, eco-friendly handplanes.

Swells

Unfortunately, there weren’t any waves in Corona del Mar from Monday to Thursday. On Friday, a new, long period S-SSE moved in late producing 1-2ft waves. On Saturday and Sunday the S-SSE swell built up and the waves were 3-4ft and the conditions were great.

Standout Breaks for this Week

El Morro: The S-SSE made for nice shaped waves at both The Point and other peaks along El Morro. The waves were really hollow, especially at high tide. The waves at El Morro are going to continue to be good in the coming week.

Water Temperature and Weather

The water temperature this week has been about 70 degrees. Combined with the warm weather we have been having, the water is perfect for board shorts.

Forecast

This coming week is going to be a great surfing week. The SSE swell is going to continue through Wednesday producing 3-5ft waves. On Thursday, a new long period SSE swell will hit CdM producing 2-3ft waves.
