The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s 13u Black team continued its strong 2015 season with another championship last weekend at the SPK Bad Boys Summer Slam Tournament.
The Lightning won the tough gold division championship and beat Compton Magic, High Desert Phenoms and Shoreline Shockwave en route to the final game against the #21 ranked team on the West Coast, South Bay Select.
The Lightning avenged a loss earlier in the tournament to South Bay by coming back in the championship game after being down 12 points in the 1st half. The team built on its strong defensive principals going into the 2nd half and pulled-away 58-44 for the tournament title.
The team was led all weekend by hot shooting Cade Overfelt, who nailed 16 three-pointers over the tournament, and John Humphreys, who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds. Danny Hatch led the team in assists and also took over the championship game at one point with four straight buckets. Charlie Levis manned the paint rebounding, scoring and defending bigger players all weekend while Justin Lin (who the team named the MVP of the tournament), Ethan Garbers and Troy Smith all hit big shots and played extremely well for the Lightning.
