Guest Rant By Gigi

I drive a car and I do ride a bike at times. I do NOT ride a bike in heavy traffic, nor do I “wobble” when I ride. I also ride a Segway. In all my “transportation” vehicles, I follow the rules of the road. On my bike and the Segway, I follow the same rules as if I were driving. i.e., stop at stop signs, signal my intentions, don’t drive erratically, am aware of my surroundings. In other words, I am not only thinking of myself and my needs and my wants. (What a concept!) I do not ride in between other vehicles. I do not cross in front of moving traffic with my hand out indicating everyone else should stop moving. I do not wobble around like a Weeble looking like I am going to fall over at any moment since a) I have no balance or b) I forgot how to stay up on a two-wheeler.

That being said… how in God’s name are we drivers supposed to stay three feet away from the bike riders when they weave in and out of traffic? Are we supposed to drive off the road? Go up a hill? Slam our breaks on and get rear-ended? Drive around with a retractable tape measure?

What about on Bayside Drive when they ride 4 or 5 people across and you are in the opposite lane? Are we supposed to drive in the ditch? Drive on to someone’s property?

What about when I am driving on PCH and one of those “wobbly” riders start weaving around? Am I supposed to drive onto the sidewalk?

When did this world become an “All About Me” society and not about common sense?

And how about riding in the BIKE LANE... not on the white line... but in the ACTUAL LANE! Another concept forgotten or cutting across a lane of traffic without looking when you realize you want to go straight. I do my best to get into the left lane to try and be considerate, but come on.... follow the rules of the road... I do wish cops would enforce cyclists following the rules of the road for a change. Maybe they'd quit blowing through stops and red lights. I'm with you 100% in your frustration Gigi.

I'm all about bicycle commuting. But, using busy thoroughfares for recreational cycling is just a dumb concept. The roads are for getting from point A to point B. If you're cycling on the road to work, or the grocery store, mo' power. But, if you're cycling on Coast Highway so that you can get some exercise in the sun and expect people on a *highway* to kowtow to your whims - that is a special interest that is out of control.
